Polyps

The cells in our bodies sometimes enlarge twice their normal size, a process called neoplasia. These overgrowths may result in swelling of the tissues. The swellings occur either on top of the tissue or inside. In these cases, overgrowths that occur on the upper part are usually called polyps.

Polyps can affect any part of the body that has the mucous membrane such as the cervix, the small intestines, the urinary bladder and the uterus. The difference between cancer and polyps is that the tissue growths do not stop enlarging. At one time in our lifetime, we may experience this, although a high percentage goes unnoticed. The reason is that they rarely present any visible symptoms with occasional pain which is often ignored. Let us discuss the various types

The most common form affects the colon in the intestines. If not treated in the first stages of appearance; however, they may grow into malignant tumors that cause colon cancer. This is important because you may suffer without clear symptom. Occasionally though, bleeding, diarrhea may occur. It may also cause constipation and a lot of bowel movement. A colon scope can be used to detect this, process referred to as colonoscopy. Others are Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) which is usually used by doctors to diagnose colon cancer X-ray or sigmoidoscopy.

Nasal polyps affect nasal passages and are most common in people wit respiratory problems, such as hey fever and sinusitis. In this state, it causes irritation of the nose and sinuses, and makes the nasal and sinuses to have difficulty or obstruction to pass air into the lungs causing infections. These infections result in allergies such as sinusitis. This condition does not have specific symptoms because it portrays itself just like common cold. Symptoms include blocked nose, running nose, stuffiness, headaches and loss of sense of smell and sometimes loss of sense of taste. Avoid aspirin drugs if you are allergic because studies have shown that it is a major contributor to the overgrowth of tissue.

The rarest type affects the rectum causing the tissue to grow on the walls. It affects up 50% percent of the population at one stage in their life, but they are fairly common in elderly people. Rectum is the segment of large intestines that ends in the anus. These overgrowths of tissue may either be malignant (cancerous) or benign .The cause is however not known but the only way to avoid it, it is better to eat food with a lot of fiber; you can substitute red meat with white meat. White meat is found in fish and poultry.

Remember that this condition can also be hereditary. A parent who has once been diagnosed with this problem should also ensure that children are also examined before it’s too late. Later, it may be very expensive to treat or fatal. Check your diet; ensure it contains little or no animal fat. Ensure that if you have allergy, treat it early enough. Consult a doctor who may prescribe drugs that contain an allergen to increase anti-bodies in your blood to counteract the allergies.
