There are many diseases that people men suffer from, and one of the most distressing is Peyronies disease. If you think you may be suffering from this you need to get to know what the disease is all about and get to know the treatment options.
What is it?
Peyronies disease is the name given to the process where plaques form in the shaft of the penis. Alternate names include cavernositis and plastic induration. These plaques consist of fibrous tissue and form hard and stiff areas, which is essentially internal scarring. Occasionally calcium can also be deposited there, making it that much harder. It has also been described that there is a chronic inflammatory process that leads to the scarring. These plaques limit blood flow to affected area of the penis, and therefore during an erection more blood will accumulate on the unaffected side, resulting in curvature.

Some men with this problem do not require any form of official treatment, and fortunately for them the symptoms resolve on their own. The unfortunate part for most of the men with this disease is that some sort of intervention needs to take place in order to treat the disease. There are three main categories of Peyronies disease treatment options.
Medical treatment options
There are various types of medication and supplements that can be used. Vitamins B and E help to reduce the pain that comes with the deformity. Tamoxifen has been said to help reduce the formation of further plaques. It is very useful in the early stages of the disease, and is also helpful in cases of breast cancer. Verapamil helps to decrease the plaque size, thus helping to reduce the amount of pain when it is injected into the plaque. The reason behind its effectiveness is that it is also used as a treatment for high blood pressure.
Use of devices
One of the Peyronies disease treatment options incorporates the use of various machines. Traction devices are available and intended to straighten out the penis, reducing the curvature. Shock wave therapy is a relatively new therapy and the results so far have shown that it helps to improve the disease. Radiation therapy has been suggested as a therapeutic option, but more studies still have to be done in order to know the benefits for sure.
Surgical
Surgery is a more invasive treatment option and because of the risks associated with it, it is often the last resort as far as treatment options are concerned. This is usually only considered if the symptoms of Peyronies disease have lasted for more than a year, or if the symptoms have not bettered over the preceding three months. There are a number of surgical procedures available. One involves removing tissue that lies opposite the curvature, in a bid to help straighten the penis. Another procedure incorporates a vein pr graft, which is then placed into the plaque and is used to lengthen the area. In some cases of the disease, an implant may be done.
