Oily Skin

Is there anybody that hasn’t have problem with oily skin? Although most commonly connected with adolescence, oily skin is not exclusively problem of such turbulent period of person’s life. So, even if you are not a teenager, you might end up with your skin looking shiny, thick and dull colored and face blemishes and coarse pores that simply won’t go away.

There are several reasons why skin becomes oily. Heredity is one of them; so if one of the parents had problems with oily skin, there are high chances that children would as well. Another important reason, if not the most important one, is hormonal balance. That’s why teenagers, pregnant women, women on birth control pills… i.e. those with imbalanced hormonal levels are more submissive to have problems with oily skin. Other causes of oily skin can be found in cosmetics some people use or humidity and hot weather; and of course, stress as something that occurs on almost everyday basis to most of us is seen as additional trigger of skin problems.

When talking about treatment of oily skin, one step is always considered as No. 1 – proper cleansing. That doesn’t mean using aggressive cleansers. On the contrary, it is strongly recommended to use gentle products that would clean the skin thoroughly without irritation. Dermatologists say that you might need two types of adequate cleansers, depending on weather conditions since generally speaking, skin is less oily during cold days. That’s why during winter you probably won’t use the same products you use in the summer when sebaceous glands work more and make your skin more oily.

Clay or mud masks have proven to improve skin conditions, leaving skin healthier and less oily for some time, so you might want to use them from time to time.

People with oily skin tend to avoid using moisturizers thinking that they would deteriorate the stage of their skin. Experts dissent, saying that not only moisturizers wouldn’t harm your oily skin, but rather help your skin because even though it is oily, your skin still needs moisture. Some of them recommend using alpha hydroxy acid (AHAs) creams, which would also help you in your fight against wrinkles.

When talking about decorative cosmetics, it is recommended that you choose oil-free make-up, specially powder-based products. And another advice concerning make-up: always find time to take off your make-up before going to bed. Those few minutes would mean a lot to your skin because they would allow your skin to breathe and refresh during night. If you are on birth control pill and you think that your skin problem is connected to those, talk to your doctor about it and try either to adjust the dosage or if not applicable, find other way of birth control.

And now advice that would be maybe most challenging to obey: eliminate or at least minimize stress in your life. Although it is almost “Mission Impossible”, try to relax as much as you can, enjoy things that make you happy and results would definitely be seen on your skin.
