Drug addiction




The most serious problem that is confronting the human society is drug addiction and literally, the US government has declared a war on drug abuse. Drug addiction can be either intentional or accidental. Generally, people start using drug and think they have total control over it but gradually, it takes control of them, even before they realize and can come out of it.

The addiction can be psychological, physical or emotional and when drug addiction reaches its peak, the person is compelled to seek assistance. Physically, when a drug addicted person experiences change in the chemistry of the body, it often results in negative consequences of unable to control the impulse and urge.

They experience sudden weight loss or weight gain or change in moods, change in personality, memory impairment and various types of chronic medical conditions. They lose interest in things that they earlier had and have only one motivating factor- just to consume drugs. Almost all the systems of the body, nervous system, digestive system, respiratory system and circulatory system are affected due to drug addiction without the addict being aware of it.

Accidental drug addiction arises mainly due to curiosity and experimentation. They like to reach the pinnacle of the so, called false glory which is the sense of euphoria that comes along with drug abuse. Teenagers are more prone to drug addiction as a result of association with addicts and some athletes are addicted for enhancing their performance. Some mentally depressed people frequently use drugs to escape their sad feelings.

Drug addition is a vicious circle that has the tendency to destroy lives, friendship, families and finally, takes its toll. Drug addiction affects the society also in many ways because non users have occupational accidents causing danger to those around them. A majority of the crime is drug related and disrupts neighborhood and threats to residents.

Personally, drug addiction leads to many physiological effects like digestion problems, respiratory infections and even proving fatal, depending upon the drug, the amount, the frequency of the use and the method of drug addiction. Drug addiction can also lead to brain damage since the drug has its effect on the way the brain functions and changes its responses. When the natural functioning is interfered, the person takes the risk of experiencing drastic effects that affects the behavior, actions, feelings and motivations.

It is disheartening to learn that the drug addicted person, essentially, needs the help of a rehabilitation center and the support of friends and relatives to come out of this tragedy. The person also experiences many withdrawal symptoms and a caring for the drug and if not cared for properly may revert back to drug addiction. Drug addiction is a very serious problem that has to be dealt with collectively, by putting in a joint effort and extending all help needed to the addicted person.

Drug addiction is cancerous and can have its effect on the addicted person and socially those surrounding the addict and therefore it is the responsibility of everyone to put an end to it.
