Croup

A notable condition to be aware of with regards to a child’s health is croup. This is a respiratory condition that occurs where a child can have a difficult time coughing and can begin to hurt when coughing. It is also something that is closely related to the common cold.

This condition is one that is noted for the severe coughing that a child can deal with. The coughing is harsh and it sounds like barking. When this occurs the coughing spell will make it harder for the child to be able to breathe properly. The coughs that come out of this condition can be ones that can get worse at night when a child is less prepared to handle coughing.

It is known to be caused by viruses that also contribute to the common cold. In fact the condition will generally occur a few days after the onset of a cold in a child. When the cold virus dies out in the body an attack will be less likely to occur.

The main reason as to why croup is something that is common in a child comes from how a younger body is one that is not fully developed to handle coughing spells. This comes from how the lungs in one’s body will be more likely to swell up and the windpipe and voice box will not be able to react in a normal way. As the body matures the condition will not occur because the body will be able to handle coughs at a greater level.

The average child who deals with this will be one who is under the age of five years old. However the condition can become more severe in younger children due to how they will have smaller airways. In addition to this children who were born prematurely will be more likely to develop the condition than others because of how one’s body could be weaker than others due to a premature birth.

In the event that a child has croup it will be important to take a look at a few treatment methods. First the child should be properly hydrated. This is so the windpipe and other parts of the body can become smooth enough to where the effects of any coughing will be less severe. Keeping moisture in the air is also something to do here in that keeping moisture in the body can make the condition less intense.

It will be especially important to make sure that the child suffering from an attack is properly calmed down during an attack. Crying and doing other things during an attack will end up causing the pains of the coughing to become worse.

A typical attack will be one that is going to last for less than thirty minutes on average. If the attack goes on for longer than this it will be important to contact a doctor as soon as possible because of how a prolonged attack can cause a child to suffocate in many cases.
