Crohn’s Disease

A common type of inflammatory bowel disease that impacts many people on a daily basis is Crohn’s disease. This is a harmful condition that can impact one’s intestines and esophagus among many other areas in the body.

This is a chronic condition in the body that involves the gastrointestinal tract acting improperly. What happens here is that the tract will become inflamed. This is caused by a person’s immune system attacking that tract.

When this disease is present various areas of the tract will be impacted. The esophagus will become irritated and the intestines will end up having a difficult time absorbing nutrients and processing wastes properly. The stomach and rectum areas can also be impacted.

The symptoms that occur from Crohn’s disease are incredibly painful. Constant diarrhea is a symptom in that a flare-up of the disease can cause constant urges for a person to go to the bathroom. In some of the most severe cases of diarrhea blood can appear in one’s stool.

Pains in the abdomen can also occur. These pains can become more severe when a flare-up occurs but when this is not happening the pains can come in and out on occasion.

There are some other symptoms to be aware of as well. For example, a loss of one’s appetite and the weight loss that accompanies it can occur. A loss of iron in the blood can also occur, thus causing anemia. Some deficiencies in minerals can occur as well due to how the intestines will not work properly with many of them. Kidney stones that can obstruct kidney functions can develop primarily as a result of this.

Over time Crohn’s diseases can cause a person to become more likely to develop colorectal cancer. Sores can also develop along one’s intestines and in many cases they can move onto the skin.

The factors that cause this disease are not fully known. However it is believed that a weak immune system that is not able to process bacteria that naturally comes through the gastrointestinal tract could be a factor. Poor responses to foreign materials in the environment can also be a cause. It is known though that this is not something that can be transmitted from one person to another. The risk of a person developing this condition can be higher if that person has had a family history of this condition.

Although there is no cure for this disease the flare-ups that can cause it to become worse over time can be treated. The only real materials that can work to help with controlling them are medications that can be prescribed by a doctor. Cortisone-based medications that work to keep areas from being inflamed can be used. Medicines that work to stop actions by the immune system can work as well. In the event that the symptoms that one has are not handled well by medications surgery may be necessary in that parts of the intestines that have been impacted will need to be removed.
