Corns and Calluses

Sometimes bumpy materials can develop on one’s hands or feet that can be unsightly and in many cases painful. These materials are known as corns and calluses. They are bothersome bumpy items that can appear on these areas.

What happens with these bumps is that they are areas of dead skin cells that have been concentrated in a particular area. These cells will be ones that will have been killed off as a result of the excessive activities that can occur around a particular area of the skin.

The difference between these two conditions is a good thing to see. Corns can be found more often on the feet and can be caused by excessive rubbing of certain areas. This can also occur in cases where a person is not wearing any socks on one’s feet or the shoes that the person is wearing do not fit well. When a corn occurs a small yellowish surface can be found in an affected area. Pushing a corn can be incredibly painful.

Calluses, meanwhile, are more likely to appear on the hands. They can come onto the heels of one’s foot and in some cases the ankles or elbows. They come from the pressures that can be applied onto them over excessive periods of work. When repeating activities are experienced in an area skin will harden up in that active area and it will become thick in its feel. As a result a yellow or gray colored bumpy surface can be formed on the area.

No matter which of these conditions is experienced corns and calluses both share some features. They both feature skin that is exceptionally rough and hard. In addition to this bumps and tenderness can be experienced in their areas.

Although most of these are not going to be too severe there are some serious cases of these bumps that can occur. For example, sometimes a bump can become inflamed and give off a burning sensation. When this happens it will be important for a person to consult a doctor. In other cases it can cause an open sore that can end up being infected.

The main way of how corns and calluses can be treated is by allowing them to heal on their own. These will need to relax and not deal with a great deal of activity so that the dead skin cells can wear out and be able to fall off of the rest of the skin so that they can go away.

In addition to this some treatments can be used to help with relaxing an impacted area. A warm soaking followed by the use of a pumice stone to help with rubbing off dead skin cells can also work.

In some cases the bump can be cut away. It will be best to consult a doctor to take care of it in this manner though. This is because cutting it on one’s own can cause bleeding or possibly a greater amount of damage to the area.
