Candidiasis

What is candidiasis?
Candidiasis, more commonly known as a yeast infection, occurs when there is an overgrowth of the organism candida albicans. The organism is found normally in the vaginal area and gastrointestinal tract, but causes problems in individuals who have a compromised immune system.

The infection can also result when there is damage to the skin or when an individual is exposed to conditions that are very humid or warm. Under normal circumstances there is a balance between this organism and normal bacteria, which suppress it. Antibiotics kill these bacteria, leaving the candida free to grow.

Symptoms
The symptoms people have will depend on where the area involved is. If it is oral there will be white patches on the cheeks and tongue, and this will be painful. If it extends to the oesophagus there will be pain on swallowing. If found on skin folds it will lead to a rash and pimples, along with burning and itching. If it involves the vagina it leads to a yellow discharge, redness, itching and burning.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of candidiasis is generally made from the history, and a scraping of the area will be taken for examination under a microscope. Accurately identifying this condition is important because it can resemble a number of other skin disorders.

Treatment
Candidiasis can be treated with a number of different modes and this will depend on the area involved. If it involves the mouth then treatment may be in the form of medicated lozenges or mouthwash. If it is vaginal then the ointment can be made available as a suppository. If the infection is rather severe then oral anti-yeast medication can be made available. The mode of medication can also be determined by what is most comfortable for you.

Aside from identifying the extent of the infection, when deciding on treatment the doctor will look at other things as well to make sure you get the most suitable treatment. This includes your age and overall health, as well as your medical history. The reason for this is that if you are using any medications that have been suppressing your immune system or if you have any conditions that compromise your immunity, the doctor can treat you with more potent medication than normal. Other things that the doctor will look at are your tolerance for certain types of medication as well as therapies or procedures.

Medication includes clotrimazole, nystatin, ketoconazole and fluconazole, to name but a few. The treatment period is longer than that for bacteria, and can extend up to six months, but never longer. Aside from these there are certain adjunctive therapies that can be put into place like the use of probiotics to return your body’s natural candida suppressant. It is also advisable to eat a healthy diet.

It has been said that there are some herbal remedies for the condition. The advantage here is that you will suffer fewer drug side effects. It is said to be safer, cheaper and more potent than allopathic medication.
