Bags Under the Eyes




Bags under the eyes are something that usually happens as a person gets older. This term is used to describe the puffiness or swelling that occurs under the eyes which at times may have fluid buildup as well. This happens because as a person gets older, the muscles around the eye become weaker, then the fat that is normally around the eyes move towards the lower eye lids which cause the puffy appearance. Any fluid that is there makes them look swollen as well.

Bags under the eyes are not usually a cause for concern regarding medical conditions but are rather usually only a concern for cosmetic reasons. Many times home remedies such as ice packs or cold compresses can reduce the appearance and for those who experience a greater amount of puffiness that is bothersome, they can resort to various cosmetic treatments.

The basic symptoms of this condition include saggy or loose skin under the eyes, dark circles and mild swelling. The severity of these bags varies from person to person. There may be more cause for concern if these bags become severe and persistent. If there is redness, if they feel itchy or if there is any pain, the person is recommended to see the doctor as well. Some conditions that included bags under the eyes may also affect other parts of the body and in this case, it should be brought to the attention of a medical professional. While these symptoms may not mean anything serious, it should still be examined, as they could also be the result of thyroid or kidney problems, an allergy, or an infection.

There are a number of causes for bags under the eyes to appear other than the natural process of aging. Changes in weather may cause fluid retention is some individuals thus adding more swelling to various parts of the body including below the eyes. Such things as not getting enough sleep or even sleeping on your back can cause these as well. The bags that are accompanied with redness and itchiness may be due to allergies or dermatitis. Sometimes it is simply heredity that causes this.

For those bags under the eyes that are only a cosmetic concern, there are various treatments available. There are creams and ointments that can be placed on the skin to reduce the appearance of the dark circles and puffiness. Cold compresses and sleeping with you head raised is a more economical way of reducing the appearance which works for some individuals. Other remedies include getting more sleep and reducing the amount of allergens that the person comes into contact with.

For those who suffer from a more severe form, there are chemical peels and skin resurfacing that can be done. There is also the option of eyelid surgery which removes the extra fat and the skin that is sagging to take away the bags altogether. Before the more aggressive routes are taken, it is recommended that the person have various consultation with doctors first.
